What’s Inside a Medieval Gradual? Music in Advent in the Fifteenth Century

Liturgical books are of great importance to our understanding of medieval sacred music. One of the rare manuscripts of our library is such a volume. When we understand how these books were assembled and used, this can be a clue to repertoire and performance. In particular, in the season of advent, the medieval series of antiphons beginning with the word “O,” are a longer series than after the Council of Trent, and they even gave rise to polyphonic repertoire.

A professor at the School of Music since 1985, Paul A. in musicology from Harvard University. His main areas of research are in medieval and renaissance music, followed by film music. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he is a winner of the Deems Taylor Award of the American Society of Composers and Performers, and his electronic composition Contours after Aeschylus was performed at the National Arts Centre.

Oudin, Shelton et les autres : filiation et modernité dans les traductions de Don Quichotte

Dans le premier volet de cet exposé, en français,Editions Le Cycliste,http://www.lunetteslouisvuittonpascher.info, vous découvrirez combien importants et révélateurs sont les liens de filiation qui unissent les différentes traductions françaises de Don Quichotte depuis la toute première traduction de la Première partie par César Oudin en 1614,Série de conférences « Trésors de la bibliothèque ». Dans le second volet, en anglais, l’étonnante modernité de ces traductions qu’on dit parfois « anciennes » sera abordée par le biais d’un passage plutôt osé de la première traduction anglaise de Thomas Shelton en 1612. Rappelons ici que la Bibliothèque de l’Université possède maintenant un exemplaire rarissime, publié en 1652, de la deuxième édition complète de la traduction de Shelton.

Professeur agrégé à l’École de traduction et d’interprétation, Marc Charron enseigne entre autres la traduction générale, littéraire et spécialisée de l’anglais et de l’espagnol vers le français. Il a notamment publié sur les effets de la mondialisation en traduction dans le cadre d’un important projet appuyé par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada. En 2012, il a été professeur invité à la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, ainsi qu’au Brésil, à la Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina et à la Universidad de São Paulo. Sur la traduction en anglais et en français de la littérature du Siècle d’or espagnol, il a publié plusieurs articles sur le Lazarillo de Tormes et le Don Quichotte.

Conférencière : Clara Foz

Clara Foz est professeure agrégée à l’École de traduction et d’interprétation et traductrice agréée (ATIO). Elle a été présidente de l’Association canadienne de traductologie. Elle enseigne la traduction (anglais-espagnol-français) au premier cycle ainsi que la méthodologie de la recherche et l’histoire de la traduction, aux cycles supérieurs. Son domaine principal de recherche est l’histoire de la traduction dans l’espace hispanique. Elle a publié un livre sur les traducteurs des douzièmes et treizièmes siècles en Espagne (Le traducteur, l’Église et le roi, 1998), livre qui a été traduit en espagnol en 2000. Elle a également publié des articles sur l’histoire des traductions du Quichotte en français. Elle travaille présentement à un projet collaboratif consacré à l’histoire de la traduction en Amérique latine.

Une Encyclopédie pour changer le monde

Au départ, l’Encyclopédie ne devait être qu’une traduction française de la Cyclopedia d’Ephraïm Chambers, publiée en Angleterre, et qui avait eu une certaine popularité. Mais le projet, une fois mis dans les mains de Denis Diderot, est rapidement devenu une entreprise éditoriale d’une envergure inouïe et dont la finalité n’était rien de moins que de « changer la façon commune de penser ». Mais un livre peut-il répondre à une telle aspiration? Comment un livre peut-il changer le monde? Les éditeurs de l’Encyclopédie ont réfléchi à ce problème, et ils ont élaboré des stratégies qui mêlent militantisme ouvert et subversion clandestine des codes d’écriture pour atteindre leurs objectifs.

Mitia Rioux-Beaulne est professeur au Département de philosophie depuis 2007 et chercheur affilié à l’Institut de recherche sur la science, la société et la politique publique depuis 2012. La première ministre Alison Redford a pour sa part affirmé que les remarques de M. Flanagan lui donnaient la nausée, et qu’elles constituaient un exemple parfait d’un argument idéologique poussé à l’extrême.

Dans un communiqué publié jeudi, CBC a aussi affirmé qu’elle bannirait M. Flanagan comme commentateur à l’émission Power and Politics.

Les liens existants entre M. Flanagan et le premier ministre Stephen Harper remontent à l’époque du Parti réformiste du Canada. M. Flanagan a agi à deux reprises en tant que directeur de campagne de M. Harper lors de courses à la direction.

En 2004,Tom Flanagan a dirigé la campagne du Parti conservateur, lorsque le parti a insinué que le Parti libéral du Canada appuyait la pornographie infantile en ne voulant pas renforcer la loi à cet égard.

Selon la logique de plusieurs commetaires ici, on devrait tenir chaque parti politque responsable pour les actes criminels et déviants qu’ils ont commis dans leurs vies privés? Flanagan est un épais et je suis certains que Harper et sa gagne se sont battus la tête contre un mur quands ils ont entendus ces commentaires. Je suis certains que des gens de charactère méprisable travaillent ou ont travailler pour tous les partis dans notre histoire. Ca ne veut pas dire qu’ils sont tous pareils. Je n’aime pas Harper, mais ce n’est pas cette histoire qui devrait changer l’opinion de quequ’un. C’est comme si tu découvre que un de tes collègues/voisins/amis/membre de famille est un tueur en série. Le savais-tu? Est-ce que ca veut dire que t’es pareil?
