Cela fait déjà dix ans que le prêtre, humaniste et militant de la cause algérienne, l’Abbé Berenguer, est mort (le 14/11/1996) à Aix en Provence (France), alors en traitement médical spécialisé,g star en ligne, et inhumé au cimetière chrétien de Tlemcen le 19/11/1996 en présence des autorités civiles, militaires, religieuses, musulmanes et chrétiennes, du wali de Tlemcen et de nombreux amis

Pour être conforme à son attachement à son pays natal, déjà au grand séminaire d’Oran, alors qu’il se préparait à la prêtrise, il s’est distingué par l’approfondissement de l’histoire multiséculaire de l’Algérie. Dès 1936, alors jeune prêtre, il s’engage publiquement pour dénoncer l’ordre colonial par la parole, dans ses prêches et par écrit dans la revue engagée, Simoun. Il veut être conséquent à son enseignement évangélique en dénonçant les injustices sociales criardes qu’il côtoie quotidiennement auprès de la population algérienne musulmane,mercurial vapor pas cher. Il sera en fait un ambassadeur itinérant du GPRA (Gouvernement Provisoire de la République Algérienne) en Amérique latine. Ce livre participe à l’écriture de l’histoire de l’Algérie contemporaine. En 1996, il est évacué d’urgence d’Oran sur la France pour des soins médicaux spécialisés. C’est à Aix en Provence qu’il meurt le 14/11/1996 et sera enterré quelques jours plus tard à Tlemcen suivant son ardent désir. Le 01/11/1998, sur proposition de l’Organisation nationale des anciens Moudjahidin, l’APC d’Oran donne le nom d’Alfred Berenguer à une rue d’Oran qui relie la place du Maghreb au boulevard Emir Abdelkader au centre-ville, en reconnaissance de son passé au service de ses concitoyens et de sa participation active à la libération de l’Algérie. L’abbé Berenguer,g star, comme d’autre religieux catholiques après lui,discount g star, à l’instar du cardinal Duval ou de Monseigneur Scotto, ont tissé, par leurs actions généreuses, des passerelles entre l’Algérie et la France pour que l’amitié et le respect de l’autre soient les ciment d’un humanisme fécond au service de l’homme, des peuples et aussi de la paix mondiale. C’est pourquoi les générations futures ne doivent pas ignorer de tels hommes qui ont su suivre et comprendre le sens de l’histoire, mus uniquement par leur foi profonde et sincère.

L’abbé Bérenguer ce curé dans la situation coloniale de l’Algérie, va oser élever la voix pour proclamer son indépendance. Outré par l’exclusion dont faisaient l’objet les Algériens, il soutiendra leur lutte jusqu’à la libération de leur pays. Une expérience politique et humaine très riche d’un curé d’Algérie qui, pour engagement militant,g star homme, sera fustigé, parfois violemment, par les partisans de la colonisation et leurs médias,discount g star. Fils d’émigrants espagnols , le père Bérenguer est né en 1915 à Lourmel, aujourd’hui El Amria (Algérie). «Mes parents venaient d’Andalousie. Mon père, qui se prénommait Alfredo, était né à Carthagène. Homme de liberté, il avait un fort esprit religieux porté vers la solidarité et l’amour du prochain sans distinction de foi, de race, ni de conviction.

Ce prêtre engagé bravera les siens pour se mettre au service d’une cause qu’il estimait juste. Caricaturé, critiqué, menacé mais fort de ses convictions, il résistera fermement à la présence coloniale dont il dénoncera l’oppression et la barbarie. Pour l’abbé Bérenguer : «Aller à l’école laïque et républicaine était une chance extraordinaire», disait-il, en évoquant sa prime scolarité à Frenda, ville natale également de Jacques Berque, le grand islamologue, un intellectuel qui a marqué par son esprit et sa recherche, les relations franco-arabes et méditerranéennes. Parlant de laïcité, il dira : «La vraie laïcité, celle qu’on m’a apprise à l’école, est celle qui n’est pas hostile par principe à quelque chose,g star pas cher, qui n’est pas exclusive, qui est très large, tolérante.»

Sa lutte en tant que prêtre était d’en appeler à plus d’humanité, de justice et d’égalité, ses concitoyens. La barrière demeurait quand même infranchissable entre les deux sociétés composant le paysage social colonial en Algérie. Cet homme d’église va ainsi, dans un combat singulier, briser le mur de silence qui, jusqu’au déclenchement de la révolution, séparait hermétiquement les deux sociétés, arabe et coloniale. Son engagement et son combat en faveur de l’indépendance de l’Algérie étaient à la fois,g star pas cher, une croyance et un choix. Je parle donc, j’agis en conséquence. Quelques jours après la grande manifestation de rue causée pendant plusieurs jours à Tlemcen par l’assassinat du docteur Benzerdjeb et au cours de laquelle notre curé usera de sa bonne volonté pour éviter l’effusion du sang, vient alors la publication dans Oran Républicain le 19 janvier 1956 de son article intitulé «Regards chrétiens sur l’Algérie» dans lequel il affichera ouvertement ses positions anticolonialistes. Dans cet article, il traita sans détour et avec beaucoup de courage ce qu’il pen- sait être, pour lui, la révolte des Algériens : «Les hors-la-loi ne sont qu’une poignée. Oui, mais tout un peuple est avec eux. Pourquoi nous leurrer nous-mêmes ?». Cette prise de conscience guidera son humanisme de combat en faveur de la justice, la fidélité enfin et surtout, la vérité. Il rejoindra par là le mouvement français de prise de conscience anti- colonialiste soutenu par des intellectuels dont Jean-Paul Sartre, Francis Jeanson, Maurice Audin, Frantz Fa- non, Henri Alleg.

L’abbé Bérenguers’impliquera dans le même combat, persuadé de l’injustice de la guerre imposée aux Algériens. Durant les premières années de guerre et de sa paroisse à Montagnac (Remchi) ce curé sera proche des maquis implantés dans les monts de Tlemcen et de Fillaoussène pour apporter aide et soins aux maquisards de la même manière qu’il le fit, en tant qu’aumônier militaire, lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale alors sur les pentes de Monté Casino où il rencontrera pour la première fois Ahmed Benbella, futur président de l’Algérie indépendante. Pays en guerre, il le quittera forcément pour échapper à une arrestation suite à un mandat d’arrêt lancé contre lui, en janvier 1959. Un mois après, ce curé dérangeant et insurgé qui avait sa propre conception de l’engagement contre la force des armes est condamné par contumace à

dix ans d’interdiction des droits civiques par le tribunal de Tlemcen. C’était le 20 février 1959. Diabolisé et affublé de «curé communiste» il n’échappera pas à toutes sortes de critiques mais rien ne s’opposera à sa détermination quand, clandestinement, il quittera l’Algérie pour devenir jusqu’en 1961, cet ambassadeur itinérant mais très médiatique de l’Algérie en lutte, sillonnant alors, les pays d’Amérique latine en sa qualité (1) de représentant du Croissant Rouge Algérien. L’abbé Bérenguer et

Jean-Paul Sartre partageront le sort commun d’avoir chacun de son côté porté la cause de l’indépendance en Algérie dans cette région. Il sera partout, en Argentine, au Chili, au Guatemala, au Salvador, à Costa Rica, au Pérou, à Cuba défiant les services secrets français. Exhibant ses talents d’orateur, il y animera des conférences, accordant des interviews, tout pour sensibiliser la communauté internationale sur les crimes, l’humiliation, la torture pratiqués

Des comités de soutien aux réfugiés algériens y seront installés. «En Amérique latine j’ai fait deux choses, disait-il, solliciter les secours pour les réfugiés et dire ce que je sais, ce que je pense de cette guerre imbécile et néfaste». Dans un livre d’entretien accordé à l’écrivain Geneviève Dermendjian intitulé «En toute liberté» publié en 1994, aux éditions Centurion, deux années avant sa mort l’abbé Bérenguer révolté par la misère du monde et l’injustice s’affligeait également du désert politique créé par les dictatures qui se chassaient les unes les autres, dans ces pays. En Amérique latine, l’abbé Alfred Bérenguer s’attachera l’amitié de Che Guevara et du président cubain Fidel Castro dont il sera le conseiller en matière de relations de son pays avec l’Église. A propos de Che Guevara, il dira : « (.) ce qui m’ a marqué en lui, c’est tout d’abord l’homme. L’homme qui croyait au vrai communisme, un communisme humain et non dictatorial. C’est un saintà sa façon comme l’a montré toute sa vie». Il ajoutera, par ailleurs : «jesuis plus proche d’un vrai communiste que d’un catholique tiède. Un communiste chaleureux qui est au service de l’homme, qui travaille pour relever l’ouvrier et en faire unhomme libre, dans le respect desautres». Du séjour du «Che» dansnotre pays dont il était séduit du combat qu’il menait, le père Bérenguer raconte, dans son entretien avec l’historienne Geneviève Dermendjian :«. et quand il a vu que le régime tournait un peu à la dictature militaire communiste à cause de Raoul Castro, il est parti en 1965, il est venu en Algérie offrir ses services, pensant trouver un vrai pays socialiste. Mais le régime militaire installé par Houari Boumediene l’a déçu cruellement. De son côté Boumediene a eu peur de cet homme () De fil en aiguille,ce refus aura causé la perte du Che. Il est parti en Angola où les Noirs ne l’ont pas accepté parce qu’il était Blanc alors qu’eux- mêmes luttaient contre les Blancs pour leur indépendance. Il s’est ensuite rendu en Bolivie où les communistes l’ont livré à la rébellion de droite, à la dictature».

J’AI REFUSÉ LA CARTEDE MOUDJAHID ET LA PENSION D’ANCIEN DÉPUTÉ

Le coup d’État de 1965 décidera l’abbé Bérenguer à s’éloigner définitivement du pouvoiren Algérie qu’il a aidé à se reconstruire dès l’indépendance. Député à la première Assemblée constituante, conseiller de Ben Bella, il renoncera à la vie politique, une manière aussi de réagir aussi contre le coup d’État pour, disait-il: «dénoncer les germes dictatoriaux de l’ État naissant». De ce fait, il sera longtemps étiqueté de ben beyliste. Militant authentique dela liberté, son itinéraire révolutionnaire est un exemple de sacrifice et defidélité à son pays. Il écrit : «. je ne voulais pas qu’on puisse dire que j’ai agi pour la gloire ou pour de l’argent,j’ai refusé la carte d’ancien moudjahid, la pension d’ancien député. De même, en tant que prêtre, j’ai refusé d’être payé par l’État algérien (.)». Influencé par le courant Jeunesse del’Eglise et par les jésuites comme Teil-hard de Chardin, le père Bérenguer passait pour un rebelle en acceptant de faire raisonner sa foi. Ainsi, disait-il: «Au XIXe siècle, Grégoire XVI ouPie IX condamnent les exégètes, les théologiens et les historiens qui ré-fléchissent sur le modernisme. Et aujourd’hui, tout cela est reconnu,enseigné. Mais, en 1870, c’est le pape qui est déclaré infaillible ! Notons – le bien : si le Christ avait voulu que les papes soient infaillibles, il serait tout de même triste que l’Eglise ait mis autant de temps à s’en rendre compte et d’ajouter : J’ai été stupéfait de constater à quel point nombre de professeurs du séminaire étaient hostiles à la Révolution française. Pourtant, liberté, égalité,fraternité c’est tout à fait l’Evangile». Enfant terrible, il l’est quand passionnément, il explique : «Aimerla vie Est-ce que les catholiques aiment la vie ? Non, ils n’aiment pas assez la vie ; ils s’embourbent avec le péché originel, le diable ; ils sont esclaves de la fatalité et du destin. Alors que Dieu est venu nous dire :«Aimez la vie, Dieu est vivant, il veut la vie, il faut espérer en elle, il faut être vivant.». Enfant terrible de l’Eglise, il l’a bien été : «. J’ai pu être un enfant terrible quand j’étais étudiant en théologie, vicaire en paroisse, député à l’Assemblée constituante algérienne où j’ai refusé de voter les lois que je ne pensais pas être bonnes pour l’Algérie. J’ai tou-jours été un enfant terrible quand on voulait m’imposer une injustice, une malhonnêteté, une erreur».

Dans sa retraite politique s’opposant à toute forme de dictature après de le coup d’Etat militaire de 1965, l’abbé Bérenguer, cet homme d’une amitié spontanée, est professeur de latin grec et d’espagnol au lycée Benzerdjeb de Tlemcen jusqu’en 1972, puis curé de la paroisse du Saint-Esprit à Oran prêtre au séminaire de cette ville. Il se retirera définitivement en 1991 à Tlemcen, sœur jumelle de Grenade des Banou el Ahmar cité où sa nostalgie andalouse était maintenue en éveil par les monuments arabes qu’il côtoyait dans son quotidiende vie et qu’il connaissait jusqu’au moindre détail de l’ histoire et de l’archéologie. Dans cette ville qu’il aimait tant et où il choisit d’y être enterré, il créa en 1975 avec un groupe d’amis l’association «Dar es Salem» ( la maison de la paix ) pour le rapprochement et l’amitié de la même manière qu’il sera, en 1990 ,membre fondateur de l’association «Ahbab tourath» pour la protection du patrimoine. Dans son ermitage au Saint Benoît, loin des regards, des patriotes Sid Ahmed Guerroudj, Mustapha Yadi et d’autres anciens compagnons lui seront à jamais fidèles.

Très attaché à l’Algérie pour la lumière et la pauvreté qui ont baigné son enfance et à son terroir fécond riche de grands hommes connus pour leur apport à la civilisation et le rayonnement de l’humanité: Saint Augustin, Ibn Khaldoun, Abi Madyan Choaïb, l’Émir Abdelkader il n’y a point de place au désespoir, affirmait-il. «Qui a fait la nation française,aimait-il souvent répéter, et combiende temps a-t-elle mis pour devenir une vraie nation ?». La tonalité qu’il accordait à l’amitié entre les hommes s’exprime on ne peut mieux à travers cette métaphore qu’il aimait tant à faire méditer : «Un homme s’en allait un jour, au crépuscule, chasser dans la montagne. Il vit au loin, sur une pente, quelque chose qui bougeait, et il pensa que c’était une bête. Il avança un peu, il vit que c’était un homme. Il s’approcha encore. Alorsil reconnut son frère».

Ajoutez 1 cuil à café de concentré de tomates. Salez et poivrez. Versez cette préparation dans un saladier. Mettez des glaçons dans un autre, posez le saladier de soupe dessus et mettez le tout au réfrigérateur jusqu’au moment de servir.

Sortez alors les écorces et les billes de melon. Répartissez celles-ci dans les écorces. Versez la soupe glacée de tomates. Servez tout de suite.
